A Burning Man 2019 Art Grant Honorarium, my installation Circus Fabulae was a two-story, 25’ diameter gazebo of porch swings. It served as a space for both inner and outer contemplation, as well as a place for aerial performances. The six inward-facing swings on the bottom floor provide a space for talking, socializing, and enjoying the performances. The six outward-facing swings on the second floor gave people 360-degree views of the Burning Man event, and inspired self-contemplation. Each of the 12 porch swings were painted by a different artist, most of whom were members of the team.
While I dreamt up and concepted Circus Fabulae, I relied on an all-volunteer team of 18 people to bring it to life. We spent three months painting, sawing, screwing, and welding the structure together before shipping it out to the desert. There, we spent five additional days installing it.
